Title: Divergent
Author: Veronica Roth
Pages: 496
Genre: YA / Dystopian

In a dystopian Chicago, the population is divided into factions: Candor, Erudite, Amity, Dauntless, Abnegation and those who refuse a faction... the factionless.
Beatrice Prior has grown up in the Abnegation sect. She's led a life of selflessness along with her brother and Abnegation leader parents. But now at 16, she has the opportunity for change. By undergoing an aptitude test she can truly find out what faction she belongs in - yet ultimately it'll be her choice whether to remain in her own faction or leave the life she's known (including her family) behind and choose a different one.
Each faction represents a different philosophy or virtue: Dauntless- the brave, Abnegation- the selfless, Candor- the honest, Erudite- the intelligent, and Amity- the peaceful. She'll have to choose the faction that she best fits into since her choice is lifelong. But what if you didn't fit in? What if you were something else... a Divergent?
Fans of The Hunger Games will rejoice when they get their hands on Divergent. Beatrice or Tris as she is later called, is one badass girl. She originally doesn't come off that way since she is this skinny, little thing who gets her butt handed to her on a few occasions. But she is sturdy and resilient and really becomes quite the hero. Her growth and maturity throughout the story are captivating as is her ability in confronting her fears. There are also a slew of characters that make the story entertaining. Four, her trainer and romantic interest, her trainee friends, faction members and even the bad guys that you love to hate make this unputdownable.
All in all, Divergent was a perfect read for me. It held my interest the whole time and didn't let go for one second. I was reading this book everywhere and was actually saddened when it ended because who knows how long it'll be for the next in the series to be released. Full of political tension, action, adventure and a lot of extreme sports - you will not find a dull moment in the dystopian world you'll find in Divergent. Highly recommended.
My Rating:

ReplyDelete"Unputdownable"? is that a word lol! What a great review. Its a very long book, but your excellent book discussion of plot and theme convince me its good enough to not notice the length. Thanks for such a thoughtful review.
ReplyDelete@Gina - it is so not a word... but I couldn't describe it any other way haha. Yes, I make up my own vocabulary when excited. :)

ReplyDeleteI loved this book. I read it really early (as part of an ARC tour) and I hadn't read any reviews when I wrote mine. Now, I'm reading lots and lots of positive feedback and it's so exciting. I cannot wait to re-read it when it comes out!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I already have this one but I'm going to wait until it's closer to release date to read it. I'm holding out to do so though because I keep hearing that it's arlready getting fantastic raving reviews!
ReplyDeleteI really like bad ass girls, but I night be getting a little tired of dystopias (gasp!)
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I didn't think I'd be interested in this one, but now you have me rethink that. Although I have to say, the four factions first remind me of the four houses in Harry Potter. Hihi!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I am totally looking forward to reading this book!
ReplyDeleteI heard a lot of great things about it. I can't wait for this book to come out. I'm so happy though that Summit Entertainment bought the movie rights to this book. YAY! thank you very much for a wonderful review!
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the overview I wasn't really expecting much but decided to take a chance and give it a go anyway. I was surprised at how much I came to enjoy the protagonist. I love how strong she is, even when she's at her "weakest". Just when I thought I had her traits down, she'd totally surprise me. Who doesn't like a surprise?! It was refreshing and entertaining. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of the series.
