Musing Mondays

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about talking to strangers…

We were all warned as children to 'never talk to strangers', but how do you feel about book-talk with random people? When you see people reading, do you ask what it is? Do you talk to people in the book store or the library? Why or why not? What do you do if people talk to you? (question courtesy of Dena)

I am a psycho... I can't help it. I absolutely do talk to random people about what they're reading. Mostly, it's only if I have read the book already. I'll ask so what do you think so far? or Where are you by? And then of course, I'll give a two thumbs up sign or a meh if it wasn't so good. That kind of thing.

While in New York - I was totally harassing strangers on my subway rides since they do a lot of reading while commuting to work. I don't get that here in Miami. But I do harass most of my co-workers about what they're reading or if they've read anything good and so forth. I've even coerced them all into having a lunch hour book club once a month. It's funny that I've become their go-to girl for books to read and so forth.

So yes, I absolutely am a random person book stalker. What can I say? I love to read and I love to see people reading.

What do you use to mark your place while reading? Do you have a definite preference? Do you use bookmarks, paper, or (gasp) turn down the pages? If you use bookmarks, do you have a favourite one?

I am addicted to magnetic bookmarks. Yes, I have two little rugrats running around who love to pull out my bookmarks. It was easy for them since my other bookmarks tended to have a string or ribbon hanging off the book. These new magnetic bookmarks that I've been buying are awesome for me. Firstly, nothing hangs off of the book so they're harder to detect. Secondly, I am able to mark the book anywhere around the edges - which is cool if I stop reading somewhere mid-page. Plus there are four in each pack so once one of them gets a little bent out of shape or one of my kids sticks it in his/her mouth and it gets all gooey, I just switch on over to the next one. Here's a pic of the one's I buy all the time:

They also have doggies, monkeys and all other types of cutie-patootie little critters. :D

How do you choose what to buy from your local bookstore? Do you have a list, or just browse? What is the selection in your book store like? Do you find what you're looking for? Do you feel pressured to buy the kind of books the store makes prominent? (question courtesy of MizB)

I never have a list or anything like that. I normally just browse and anything that catches my fancy I buy. Maybe once or twice I'll head out with a particular title that I need to get. But normally it's just something with a pretty cover or something that I've been meaning to get - that sorta thing.

As for the bookstore I go to, there aren't any independently owned or used book stores in my area. We only have mega-big Borders or the gi-normous Barnes & Noble (and still neither of them are close to me) so if I decide to go in person to buy a few books it's to either of those. They are well stocked and I can choose and pick all I want. Normally though, I tend to shop online it's easier, cheaper and I don't have to spend extra reading time to go out and do the book shopping. hehe

Musing Mondays

In these last few days before Christmas, I'm sure there are plenty of us scrambling to get our last minute shopping done. Are you buying any books for friends or family (or even yourself)? Do you expect to receive any bookish gifts from others - books, or book-related?

To be honest, I'm not giving any books for Christmas other than for my little one's. Sadly, in my family, I am the only bookworm. But I will say one thing I am extremely excited about. I only put one thing on my wish list this year for my husband and that was a Sony Reader. I am almost sure that he will get it - as all he does is complain about my books in every nook and cranny around the house. I can't wait and here's to hoping (with my fingers crossed) that I get it.

Musing Mondays

With the holiday season now upon us, how does it affect your reading? Do you have more, or less, time to read at Christmas? Do you read Christmas themed/related books?

To be honest, the holidays really do affect my reading. For starters, I have less time to read then I normally do. Why? Well having two small children under foot I get a lot of my reading done once they're in bed. But with Christmas right around the corner, I use up that free time to wrap gifts, prepare Christmas cards, do last minute online shopping, etc. So yes, I definitely get less reading done around the holidays.

As for Christmas themed/related books - I do read them. Not many. Maybe a couple of them just to get me in the Christmas spirit. I go for the light Christmas reads to just snuggle up with some hot chocolate on a colder (not that it gets very cold in Miami) day... type feely book (if that makes sense).

Musing Mondays

I'm jumping on the bandwagon, or at least trying to. This is my first Musing Mondays. Hopefully, I did it right. :)

Today's Musing Mondays from Should Be Reading is as follows. For full rules and other answers click here.

1. What are you reading right now? I'm reading Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos.
2. What did you recently finish reading and what did you think about it? I recently finished reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. (click on the link for my review). I loved it.
3. What do you think you'll read next? Testimony by Anita Shreve (because I've had it for a couple of weeks and everyone is raving about it).
4. Will you read any holiday-themed books soon? Yes, I have a few that I should be receiving from Amazon throughout the week and I just bought On Strike for Christmas by Sheila Roberts.
