The story of Novalie's life is so beautiful - she overcomes so many obstacles (from being abandoned by her mother as a child to living and giving birth in a Walmart, etc.) yet always looks on the brighter side. She goes through the good, bad, and ugly. I laughed and I cried. It just goes to show that friends can be just as much your family as those who are blood-related to you, sometimes they are even more so. Wasn't a movie made out of this? I vaguely recall it. The book, as usual, would probably be far, far better!

I've never read anything by Billie Letts, but in the fall I won a copy of the unabridged audio of Made in the U.S.A. I haven't even taken the plastic off the box. Your review made me dig out CDs, and I'm thinking I should probably read this sooner than later. Thanks for the great review.

I read this book several years ago and can still remember the strong reaction I had to the story and the characters. It is still probably one of my top ten favorite books, and one I will never forget. And while the movie is good, it is so where near as wonderful as the book

I've never read this but loved the movie. I'd be afraid to read the book now as usually the book is so much better than the movie that I don't like the movie after reading the book :-).

I loved the movie they made of this, and I have always wanted to read the book!

I love this book! I also loved the movie made out of it. When I was younger the book used to be a comfort read that I'd read again when I felt down.
