The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Took me long enough to read this one, huh? Gosh, and what was I thinking to prolong it? I actually read this right around the big hype for Catching Fire - and I was even a bit intimidated to start it. I actually started reading it and put it down after a chapter or two (for like a day) and then I picked it up again and never put it back down until I finished it... and then I was still freaking out because I just wanted more. Luckily for me Catching Fire had just come out and I ran to my local bookstore and gobbled that one right up too.

For those of you who don’t already know, here’s a quick summary of the story so you sorta get the gist of it. Katniss Everdeen is 16 years old and resides in District 12 with her mother and sister. District 12 is the poorest district in Panem (a/k/a what remains of the United States). Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and as punishment they must now choose two young tributes (one male, one female) to represent their district in what is known as THE HUNGER GAMES. Meaning 24 children will have to duke it out on live television using whatever talents (hunting, archery, strength, etc.) they have as their weapon. They will be placed in an arena that will constantly be changing with all sorts of unforeseen dangers as well as these other deadly combatants and will basically have no option but to kill or be killed.

For Katniss and Peeta (the two tributes from District 12) - this will be no easy feat. For it's every man for himself and any feelings for each other can only be seen as a weakness. With no one to trust but herself and her instincts - it is up to Katniss to do her best and survive for the arena is ready, the tributes are deadly, and the cameras are watching...let the games begin.

Katniss, although not always the most likeable of characters, is a force to be reckoned with. I have never been so taken in by a character before. The danger lurking at every corner, the fear, the worry - it is all so real. Peeta, although only the baker's son, is also smart and cunning and you can't help rooting for them from the start. I went through so many emotions while reading this. It was like an adrenaline rush. I will even confess that there was a time or two that I actually found myself jumping in my seat (I know, don't make fun of me) from the excitement.

In closing, I will say this: This book is simply kick ass! If you don't already own a copy - do yourself a favor and get your hands on one pronto. I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.
